You take the name and see people shivering. Ask them to talk in English and their voice vanishes.
This is a common fear among bank aspirants. You feel shy to speak in English when standing in a group, but you speak good English when you are speaking alone or among friends.
Let me help you overcome this fear and prepare you to make English scoring for the upcoming exams.
Here is the simplest tip my English teacher told me when I was in school. To prepare the English section, you should make a habit to learn
- 5 words.
- 3 Synonyms or Antonyms, and
- 1 grammar rule.
This tip indeed helped me a lot. But after a stage, this practice was of no use to me. If you are preparing for the upcoming exam, you should follow a strategy but before that, you should know the reason why this subject is considered as tough.
Why is English tough?
There are three basic reasons for calling English as the toughest part.,
- We speak and write in our native language (Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu etc) most of the times of our day. Hence, we least practice English as a language. We read English as a subject.
- Good English teachers are rare to find. Teaching science and commerce can produce good money but teaching English may or may not earn much. Hence the students who are weak in English face problem in finding a good guide.
- It is rumored that English is tough. Believe me, it is the easiest language available on earth.
How can you make English scoring?
You must know and understand every section and the logic behind the involvement of these section into the exams.
Fill in the Blanks
Fill in the blank questions are asked to test the candidate’s knowledge of grammar, prepositions, articles and usage of the correct words.
Here is a fact. 80% correct answers of fill in the blanks is given by the students by experience of word usage and not because they know the rule.
The only reason behind this fact is that the mind knows which word should come next in a particular sentence in a particular condition. This comes by practice.
Suppose you are asked a question?
I ….. a girl.
Option 1. is, 2. am, 3. are, 4. none.
What will be your answer?
- am right? Do you have remember the rule for this answer? This comes by experience.
Now how to use this technique to improve your English score?
Simple try to talk to everyone in English. But most important talk to yourself in English only. Everyone talks to themselves in their mind. But we talk to us in our native language. From now on start talking to yourself in English. Make English your native language and believe me you will not have to learn any rules to score good in fill in the blanks.
Vocabulary & Synonyms/Antonyms
It was a heart attack moment for me when I was preparing to learn vocabulary and came across this fact.
Approximately one new word is added to the English language every two hours and around 4,000 new words are added to the English dictionary every year.
So, how can you learn each and every word to master English? You can’t and no one can. All you have to do is to make a list of 100 most used words in English language and learn them by heart in a month. Repeat this with 100 new words every month.
But how can you score well in English section of the exams?
Words used in English sentences have a certain structure and every word is not used in every sentence.
For example, simple words are made complex by adding prefix and suffix with them like, pose becomes dis-pose, obey becomes dis-obey.
Here pose means to stand in a certain way but dispose means to through or disown. Here the prefix dis- does not always mean to oppose the original word but it certainly means to do something negative.
If you understand the tone in which a particular word is put in the question, you can answer it correctly. The questions are not designed to know the actual meaning of the word, but they are intended to ask the mean in that particular sentence asked in the question.
You have to master the tone of word in the question.
You can visit on this website to learn it well and tell me in comments if you need any help in understanding them.
This is the most tough section asked in the exams because most students either leave this section or answer incorrect. It is always good to leave than to guess if you don’t know the answer.
Usually, there are some common types of errors students do in exams. Learning these common errors may help you score well in this section. But as far as my advice is concerned, this section is better prepared by leaarning one rule daily and practicing it with 10-15 question.
There cannot be any situation where/ (1) somebody makes money in an asset/ (2) located in India and does not pay tax / (3) either to India or to the country of this origin. / (4) No error (5)
In this question you have to mark the part of a sentence which has a grammatical error. In this example, the error lies in part 2, where the word ‘on’ should have been used instead of ‘in.’ Questions like these will require you to pay close attention as they can be confusing at times.
A Cloze test consists of a passage with some words removed. The reason for taking his test is to test your understanding when there are misprints of blurred words during your job.
The logic is similar to the logic used in fill in the blanks section. You must use English as more you can in your daily life.
For solving this section you must adopt the following strategy,
- Read whole paragraph to understand what this paragraph wants to say (the story behind writing it) and in which situation it is written.
- Doing so you can guess half of the answers. Look them if they are present in the corresponding option or not.
- If present, mark them.
- Again start solving from the first question of this para and you will be able to relate all the option with the context of the paragraph.
- If still, you are confused with the option, leave it. This may be a trick to consume your time. You can come back if time is left in the last.
To prepare for the comprehension part in exam, all you have to do is read the newspaper to grab the tone in which it is written. The reason is in the most exams you will be provided with a an old article from a newspaper or magazine.
When you know the style and tone of the newspaper writing, it will become easier for you to get into the context easily. But here is a clue.
If you are preparing for banking exam, you should read the financial or banking section of the newspaper. For other exams, you must read the political part of the newspaper too.
But you do not have to read all the page. You must read one article (or editorial) and read it two and three times. This repetition will help your mind to tune in to the tone of the writing easily.
With this make a habit of solving one reading comprehension in a week. This practice must be mastered. But there is no rule to follow for reading comprehension. There is an strategy best designed for you. It is,
- First of all, read all the question related to the comprehension.
- Now start reading the comprehension.
- As you will proceed, you will come across the answer of the question asked later.
- Keep on marking the answers as you read them.
This is it, as simple as that.
Is English genuinely scoring?
Yes! Either you know or do not know the correct answer but average time spent by participants on English section is 17 minutes. That’s all.
So if you know the correct answers, your score can become 35 in only 17 minutes. If your answers are wrong, you are still spending 17 minutes. Since you can score 30-35 marks in just 17 minutes and as the exam is a game of time management, so english section is scoring.
Then you must be confused on how to score good, right? Let’s remove the curtain.
If you use english more than your native language, your english will improve automatically. Like the North Indians find it impossible to speak Kannada, and South Indian can not speak Punjabi. But a two year old Andhra child speaks farraata Kannada and same is true for a punjabi kid.
How could this happen? Simply because they use their language every time they need to communicate. They are surrounded by their native language. Keep yourself surrounded by English to learn it effectively.
